Learner Focused Leadership is a professional development series for campus principals that provides a focused approach and framework for instructional initiative implementation. It is designed to help evaluate and implement instructional leadership best practices and positively impact student learning.

What is Learner Focused Leadership?

Learner Focused Leadership is a professional development series that provides a focused approach and framework for instructional initiative implementation. It is designed to help new and veteran campus principals evaluate and implement instructional leadership best practices and positively impact student learning.

It will focus on:

  • instructional leadership processes
  • standards for teaching and learning
  • planning time management
  • goal achievement
  • assessment for learning
  • processes for monitoring learning
  • feedback systems
  • Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) alignment
  • coaching

Each participant will individually and collaboratively analyze their campus’ approach to learning. Personalized leadership plans will be developed through application of research-based, focused strategies that support the change process and provide sustainable success for learners.

How many sessions are included and what are the topics?

Six sessions during the course of the 2017-18 school year with additional individual/group support via WebEx between sessions. (See available dates and locations.)

Session 1: Framework for Learner Focused Leadership

Participants will explore the four components of Learner Focused Leadership: Process, Planning, Standards, and Assessment. Participants will begin work with the leverage point of Process implementation to start exploration of campus strengths and areas of improvement in collaboration, data analysis, and professional development.

Session 2: Planning for Success

This session will begin with a review of information gathered in Session 1. Participants will begin discussion of the Planning component with an emphasis on time, goals, and actions and intentionally select focus areas. Participants will utilize a root cause data analysis to draft 1-2 goals for improvement.

Session 3: Leadership Practices of Learning Standards & Assessment

Draft goals will be reviewed and participants will begin discussion of the Standards component with an emphasis on learning, instruction, and teacher collaboration. Participants will be introduced to the connection of the Assessment component with an emphasis on alignment to standards, formative and summative assessment, and learner-focused assessment.

Session 4: Using Assessment Tools to Inform Practices

The session will begin with a review of goal completion and recent accomplishments in work related to Processes, Standards, and Planning. Participants will focus on how Assessment aligns to standards, formative and summative assessments, and learner focused assessment.

Session 5: Evidence of Implementation & Success

Participants will dig deeper into the four Learner Focused Leadership components to determine long-term planning and sustainability of implementation. They will identify current level of progress toward goals and examine impact on student performance with an emphasis on sustainability of practice.

Session 6: Leveraging Learner Focused Leadership Strategies

Participants will discuss and share implementation of Learner Focused Leadership strategies and impact on student performance. They will design a long-range plan that allows for continuous use and refinement of strategies with a goal of impacting student performance.
